Another way of learning and There's more to school

The subject of these films is an innovative educational programme being carried out in schools of rural Madhya Pradesh by the Eklavya group. The programme is characterised by a process of learning through experience. Other features include writing of new textbooks, teacher orientation and teacher participation. The project has since closed down due to change in government policies.

Another way of learning won the Rajat Kamal, the National Award for the Best Scientific Film of 1994. The film was also awarded the Best Audiography prize for a non-feature film, 1994. Another way of learning was also honoured with the first prize in the education category at the International Festival of Videos on Science, Development and Society held at Trivandrum 1995.

The films are available in separate Hindi and English versions. The Hindi titles are Shiksha kaisi ho? and Leek se hatkar shiksha.

The cost of the cassette, with both the films, is Rs. 500.

Slowly but surely...

The subject of this film is a movement for social change. It documents an attempt to organise women involved in tendu leaf production in the Aravalli Hills of Rajasthan. Dealing with issues of participative management of common natural resources, it may be useful to those working for women's economic empowerment and for students of economics.

This film is available in a Hindi version entitled Dhire dhire jamano badle.

Hindi and English versions priced at Rs. 500 each.

Bali umar ko salaam or A celebration of adolescence

The past decade has been a time of rapid social change, and amongst the reflections of this is a shift in values, attitudes and behaviour with regard to sexuality. Young people in India, especially the urban youth, are becoming much more liberal in their attitudes and lifestyles, than the last generation. And, the parental generation seems to find it difficult to keep pace with this change.

If there is a conflict between what friends are saying and what the parents want, the young person cannot even expect to be part of a healthy all-sided debate since the subject is driven underground at home. In such a situation, the adolescent may find it difficult to express his/her curiosity or knowledge needs within family environs. If the family cannot cope with this transformation, the educational system is even more confused. In the age of HIV and AIDS many school systems have taken up sex education. But a major shortcoming of these attempts is that they treat the subject as biology lessons, leaving out the social aspects of behaviour and attitudes.

The script for this programme was evolved through a series of consultations with young people, their teachers and trained counselors.

The three episodes are available for the price of Rs. 1000.
